Liverpool defender Joel Matip has expressed the confidence he has in himself and his teammates coming up to the Champions League final against Tottenham Hotspur.
The centre-back has had a good season with the Reds despite struggling with injuries early in the season that reduced him to the sidelines, but the Cameroon international managed to work his way back into the starting XI.
Matip has made quite the comeback to the squad and could now feature in the final. Speaking to the club’s official website, the defender gave his thoughts on his season.
At the beginning of the season I was struggling with injuries and other lads did very well, so there was no reason to change.
But in the second half I could play and could improve. I feel good.
You are waiting for this. And then if you can use it, it’s not a bad feeling – it’s not the worst feeling.
Since his return to the squad, the 27-year-old has been a key part of Liverpool’s defensive success, with the club only losing one game in the league all season. Matip was also a standout player in the 4-0 thrashing of Barcelona, the match which saw Liverpool cruise to the final.

With the final against Spurs around the corner, the defender has expressed his confidence in claiming the trophy and believes that his team can put aside the North London club.
It was a great season and we can finish it. It’s the biggest game during this season and we will do everything for this.
It will be a completely different game, but we know we can beat them and we are looking forward.
Tottenham failed to beat Liverpool in their two fixtures this season with the Reds winning 2-1 home and away.
The two Premier League teams will go head to head on July 1 in Madrid to see who will claim the Champions League trophy.
