Diogo Jota wins Champions League Player of the Week award

Diogo Jota has won the Champions League Player of the Week award, following a stunning performance for Liverpool against Atalanta.

The Reds won 5-0 away to the Serie A side on Tuesday night, in what was considered a tough fixture beforehand. There was no denying who the star of the show was in Italy, as Jota scored a hat-trick, ensuring his reputation keeps growing.

Indeed, former Reds striker Michael Owen hailed the Portugal winger’s performance as a “masterclass” on punditry duty for BT Sport. He has also been dubbed a “pressing monster” by Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders for his tireless work rate.

Jota started in place of Roberto Firmino and took his chance in style, meaning he now has seven goals in just 10 appearances for Liverpool. His efforts have been rewarded, with the 23-year-old beating Alassane Plea, Erling Haaland and Youssef En-Nesyri to the Player of the Week prize.

Jota has arguably done enough to start against Manchester City this weekend – if Liverpool were playing any other team, I think he would be guaranteed his place in the side.

Firmino has played against City 14 times, though, and his defensive work and selflessness could see him get the nod. Although that decision may baffle some if it happens, it’s worth remembering the Brazilian has scored three times at the Etihad Stadium in the past.

Jota could be a perfect man to bring on in the second half, using his pace and end product to great effect when legs are starting to tire.
