Speaking to the official site, Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that talks between Liverpool and Emre Can regarding a new contract remain open despite claims suggesting he will leave on a free transfer in June.
Can’s four-year deal he signed upon his arrival from Bayer Leverkusen for a reported £10m back in 2014 is due to expire after this season and he and the club are struggling to agree terms to a long-term extension, with some reports suggesting Liverpool’s unwillingness to include a release clause as the reason behind the German’s reluctance to pen an extension.
Klopp, however, has confirmed that dialogue between the club and the midfielder is ongoing:
Where the situation is at, at the moment: open. That’s what we [have] said before, nothing is decided, it’s open. We are in talks with him and it’s all good so far, apart from him signing a contract for us, that’s all. No problem with that.
With reported interest from the likes of Juventus, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, it’s easy to understand why Can has his head turned by interest from abroad, but Liverpool haven’t yet given up hope on persuading him to sign a new deal at Anfield.
