Klopp eyeing up summer moves for Upamecano and Gimenez

Jurgen Klopp is eyeing up summer moves for RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano and Atletico Madrid’s Jose Gimenez, according to Passione Inter.

Liverpool currently have four established centre-backs to call upon, although Dejan Lovren could leave at the end of the season.

This latest report claims that Klopp rates both Upamecano and Gimenez highly, as he looks at possible options moving forward.

Upamecano shone for Leipzig in their recent Champions League win over Tottenham, while Gimenez came on as a substitute in Atletico’s 3-2 victory away to Liverpool.

The Reds seem to be continually linked with centre-backs at the moment, which could suggest that Lovren will move on.

The Croatian has proved over six seasons that he is too hit-and-miss for Liverpool, and at 30, the time has come to sell him.

It may also mean Klopp isn’t entirely convinced with having Joe Gomez as Virgil van Dijk’s first-choice partner, considering Upamecano and Gimenez are experienced players who may expect to start regularly.

Gomez is still only 22, which shouldn’t be forgotten, and he also hasn’t been too reliable when it comes to staying fit for long periods.

I still think he should be trusted alongside Van Dijk moving forward, however, and it would surprise me if Klopp signed someone to directly replace him.
