Klopp reveals Gomez will ‘probably’ require surgery

Jurgen Klopp has reluctantly revealed that Joe Gomez’ treatment for his serious leg injury isn’t going as he wishes and the young defender may require surgery in the near future.

Gomez fractured his lower leg in Liverpool’s 3-1 win at Burnley on December 5 and was initially expected to miss up to six weeks of action, but now two months have passed and there’s still no sign of him making a comeback anytime soon.

Ahead of the league leaders’ trip to West Ham United at the start of next week, Klopp was asked whether Gomez would need a procedure to get him back on the pitch quicker.

“I don’t know. We will see. It is possible [that he’ll need surgery], probably. It is not exactly going how we want, that’s how it is. He needs more time. We will see exactly how we do it. There were different moments when we thought we could do this or that. It will take time. We can not say more.”

Fellow centre-half Dejan Lovren is also expected to miss Monday’s clash at the London Stadium due to continuous hamstring problems but he should be available for selection much sooner than Gomez.

The 21-year-old England international has risen through the ranks at Anfield and it could be argued that he’s now first-choice at the heart of the defence alongside the immovable Virgil van Dijk.

Lovren hasn’t played since being forced off in last month’s FA Cup defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers but he was on the bench against Leicester City during midweek and despite the reoccurring issues, Liverpool are said to be confident it isn’t long-term.
