Liverpool supporters have mocked Darren Fletcher for his comments surrounding Manchester United’s future Premier League title chances.
United have gone without a league title since Alex Ferguson departed at the end of the 2012/13 season, following a period of dominance under him during the 1990s and 2000s.
All of a sudden, it is about to be seven years without tasting league success for Liverpool’s most bitter rivals, and as the Reds have found out, barren runs can last a lot longer than expected.
United are in a solid run of form under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Fletcher appears to be confident about them continuing to improve.
Speaking to beIN Sports, with quotes cited by the Express, the Scot says United must aim to win the league in the next few years, tipping Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola to leave Liverpool and Manchester City, respectively:
We need to see Manchester United winning the league in the next two or three years down the line.
That’s being realistic. The bar has been raised in terms of what it takes to win the league.”
United have to be ready for Man City and Liverpool to drop off, which will probably come in a couple of years.
I can’t see Pep Guardiola still being at Manchester City in two or three years. Jurgen Klopp, too.
Maybe it’s wishful thinking, [but] Man United have to put themselves in a position to capitalise if that happens.
Next season I expect a better campaign and in two or three years, I am expecting title challenges and potentially winning.
These Liverpool fans took to Twitter to mock Fletcher’s remarks, suggesting United are still a long way from getting back on their perch.
