Liverpool favourites to sign Ben Brereton from Forest

After being named Man of the Match in his side’s stunning 4-2 FA Cup win versus Arsenal on Sunday, Ben Brereton has reportedly caught the attention of Liverpool’s scouting team.

This attention, however, is nothing new – the Merseyside club are said to have been monitoring the striker for over a year now.

According to Oddschecker, Liverpool are the favourites to secure his signature.

The 18-year-old was sensational for Nottingham Forest against Arsenal, a game in which he converted a penalty. And a performance like that against a team of Arsenal’s ilk is naturally going to put clubs on red alert. Interest is thought to be high in Brereton with several clubs scouting the English wonderkid. These clubs include Tottenham, Everton and Leicester, as well as his former clubs Manchester United and Stoke City.

The Englishman joined Manchester United’s academy at the age of six and stayed for the next eight years before moving on to Stoke City in 2013. After two years there, he headed to Forest – where he’s been since. Thanks to his considerable development over his career, it now seems that United and Stoke made somewhat of an error in letting him go elsewhere when they did.

The cost for Brereton is thought to be in the region of £15 million, the same price as what Oliver Burke was sold to RB Leipzig for, according to the Daily Mail.

With Brereton on the radar of the aforementioned clubs and him impressing against Premier League opposition, the price may rise beyond £15 million. Furthermore, the England U19 international’s contract ends in 2021 which is another factor to his value.

Opinion

For me, the move to Liverpool doesn’t make sense. Liverpool already have Roberto Firmino, Daniel Sturridge (who is believed to be leaving this transfer window), Danny Ings and youngster Dominic Solanke on the books so another striker would cause more problems that are not needed as the club prepare for life after Philippe Coutinho.
