Liverpool’s reported pursuit of Mario Gotze has received a boost after Borussia Dortmund’s CEO admitted the club were willing to sell some attacking players in the summer given their current surplus.
Liverpool were linked with the World Cup winner throughout the 2016 summer transfer window before he opted to return to Dortmund.
However, there has been speculation recently that the Reds have revived their interest in their German midfielder and could lodge a bid in the next window.
Any such offer could well be successful, with CEO Hans Joacim Watzke conceding the club simply have “too many” offensive players.
“Especially in the offensive area, we tend to have too many players. Something can happen there,” he was quoted as saying by Ruhr Nachrichten.

Dortmund have the likes of Marco Reus, Andre Schurrle, Ousmane Dembele, Shinji Kagawa and Emre Mor all competing with Gotze for a starting berth.
On paper, though, it has been a difficult season for the 24-year old. Forced to grapple with injury problems, Gotze has made just 11 league appearances, contributing only a single goal and an assist.
It is understood that Gotze would cost in the region of £20 million, though the Reds would be reliant on him rediscovering his best form to make it a worthwhile investment.
One Dortmund star who Jurgen Klopp looks set to miss out on, meanwhile, is Christian Pulisic, with the 18-year old recently penning a contract extension.
The odds are in favour of Gotze leaving this summer, time will tell if Liverpool are the team who signs him.
