Liverpool have emerged as surprise entrants in the race to sign highly-rated Monaco left-back Benjamin Mendy, according to a report in the Liverpool Echo, citing France’s RMC Sport.
The 22-year-old defender has previously been linked with both Manchester clubs, and with Pep Guardiola wrapping up the £43m capture of Mendy’s former colleague Bernardo Silva last week, he was rumoured to have been considering a second raid on the Ligue 1 champions.
However, with Luke Shaw publicly out of favour with Old Trafford management, and Alberto Moreno likely to depart Anfield this summer; both Jose Mourinho and Jurgen Klopp are seeking reinforcements of their own at the left-back position.

Mendy won his first cap for France in March earlier this year and City are believed to be offering in the region of £40m for him, an asking price which has not deterred Liverpool so far, and would smash their previous transfer record of £35m for Andy Carroll.
With Moreno heading for the exit door and the out-of-position James Milner enduring a late-season slump last term, full-back will be a key area for Reds boss Klopp to address this summer.
Such a significant investment in one of the top young left-backs in the world would be a serious sign of intent, as Liverpool embark on what may be their biggest spending spree in history this summer.
