It’s thought that boss Jurgen Klopp is taking a keen interest in the Dutchman after becoming frustrated with negotiations for Polish midfielder Piotr Zielinski.
Liverpool have jumped to the front of the queue in the race to sign Wijnaldum after the Dutchman was linked with Tottenham and rivals Everton in recent days; with the 25-year- old likely to leave the North East side rather than join their promotion bid.
Newcastle owner Mike Ashley may also be looking to balance The Magpies’ books after the arrivals of forward Dwight Gayle and winger Matt Ritchie from Crystal Palace and Bournemouth, respectively.

However, the Magpies are reported to want £27m for the 25-year old, with Wijnaldum arriving at the club only last year for £14.5m, the club are clearly looking to make a profit out of one of their key players.
The Reds, however, will be hoping to pay close to £20m for the Newcastle midfielder, but with Liverpool off to the USA on their pre season tour on Thursday, they’ll hope to get a deal could be struck as soon as possible.
Klopp has both the desire and financial resources to add to his squad already bolstered by Loris Karius, Joel Matip, Sadio Mane and Marko Grujic.
