Liverpool ready to join boycott of new FIFA competition

FIFA may have approved plans to go ahead with a 24-team Club World Cup, but it doesn’t seem like everything will be plain sailing.

A number of European clubs are reportedly already ready to boycott plans for the revamped competition, and Liverpool look likely to be added to that list.

The competition would start in June and July 2021 and be held every four years, with eight European clubs invited to attend and face clubs from all over the world.

However, the European Club Association (ECA) have recently stood firm and confirmed that none of their teams will be involved, and Liverpool just so happen to be one of those teams.

[We are] firmly against any potential approval of a revised CWC – no ECA clubs would take part.

The Association doesn’t want any part of the competition before 2024, but suggested they may reconsider if its part of the agreed framework for the international match calendar from that year onwards.

Currently, the Club World Cup involves seven different teams from six confederations and is played in December.

The Reds have never lifted the trophy, but have been beaten finalists three times, most recently all the way back in 2005 against Sao Paolo in Japan.
