Liverpool target Junior Firpo keen on move abroad

Liverpool and Manchester United have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Real Betis left-back Junior Firpo.

The two Premier League rivals have been heavily linked with a move for the defender following an impressive individual campaign in La Liga.

The Spaniard is currently on international duty at the Under 21 European Championships, playing the full 90 minutes in his country’s 4-1 win over France in the semi-final.

Firpo, who looks set to be involved in the final against Germany on Sunday, spoke to the media following the thumping win over France.

Talking to TuttoMercatoWeb, cited by The Boot Room, the defender was asked about his immediate future, admitting he would ‘like to experience other countries’.

The market? I don’t think about it, as I’ve said many times before, we’re playing for a very important trophy. Playing in Italy in the future? It’s a good championship, there are important and historical teams.

I also like to experience other countries, but first I want to think about finishing the European Championship.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp reportedly sees the 22-year-old as an ideal back-up option to the impressive Andy Robertson, with Firpo having a £45 million release clause in his current Betis deal.

It remains unclear as to whether or not Liverpool will spend big on a cover signing, however, following Firpo’s latest comments, the Reds may well decide to firm up their initial interest.
