Jurgen Klopp has provided a squad update for Liverpool’s Champions League trip to Red Star Belgrade, with the notable omission of Xherdan Shaqiri.
Shaqiri was embroiled in a political controversy regarding his “Albanian eagle” celebration after scoring for Switzerland against Serbia at the World Cup earlier this year. There had been fears for Shaqiri’s safety if he stepped onto Serbian soil. Klopp explained his reasoning for leaving Shaqiri out of the squad.
We have heard and read the speculation and talk about what kind of reception Shaq would receive and although we have no idea what would happen, we want to go there and be focused 100% on football.
Klopp also provided an injury update on Dejan Lovren and Naby Keita as Liverpool will receive a boost knowing both are available for tomorrow’s match.
We will take pretty much everyone… Dejan and Naby are back in the travelling squad.
However, Nathaniel Clyne and captain Jordan Henderson will both miss out.
Clyney is ill and will not be involved… Hendo was close, but not close enough. He needs two proper sessions for his fitness, which he will get back at Melwood.
The boss did add that both Clyne and Henderson should be back for the weekend when Liverpool welcome Fulham to Anfield on Sunday at noon.
