Liverpool to travel to Australia for Sydney friendly

Liverpool have confirmed that they will travel to Australia to face Sydney FC in an exhibition match in May.

With the Reds currently third in the Premier League, they end their season on May 21st at home to strugglers Middlesbrough.

The NWS Government on Monday confirmed that Jurgen Klopp’s side will travel to Sydney for the first time.

The friendly will be contested at the ANZ Stadium – capacity is expected to be up to 80,000. This isn’t the first time the Reds have been involved in an exhibition match in the Australian city.

Back in January 2016, Liverpool legends faced the Socceroos in a capacity thought to be over 40,000.

Back in July 2013, Liverpool took to the MCG for a friendly against Melbourne Victory in a packed 90,000 crowd.

In July 2015, Brendan Rodgers’ side travelled to Adelaide United & Brisbane Roar – winning 2-0 and 2-1 respectively.

The rumour mill has implied that Anfield icon Steven Gerrard (now in a youth coaching capacity) could feature in a high profile guest appearance. Such rumours are yet to be confirmed by the club.

The atmosphere promises to be bumper yet again when Liverpool take on the A-League Premiers’ Plate winners on 24 May. Graham Arnold’s Sydney will also face fellow Premier League oufit Arsenal on 13 July.

Even with over a month left before the encounter, Reds legend Ian Rush is ready to savour what promises to be another stellar atmosphere.

“The last time the first team were in Australia was 2015 and the support was phenomenal,” Rush said. “The lads are really excited to get back out here and play a great game against one of Australia’s best A-league teams.”

And Jurgen Klopp himself has a message for Liverpool’s Australian contingent watching:

“We want you to be there. Everyone tells me how passionate the Reds support is in Australia. I can’t wait to see it for myself,” Klopp said. “Sydney we are coming. Get ready.”
