It wasn’t a good night for Liverpool and Florian Wirtz as Manchester City secured a 3-0 win at Anfield.
Andoni Iraola suffered his first defeat since joining the club and it was a heavy one as the Reds crumbled after Ryan Gravenberch’s red card.
In the wake of the Dutchman’s dismissal, Wirtz was sacrificed by Iraola, who brought on Trey Nyoni to beef up his midfield.
And Jermaine Pennant feels the German international is running out of time to endear himself to the Anfield faithful, likening him to Darwin Nunez.
More Florian Wirtz criticism for Liverpool
During the first half, Wirtz was one of Liverpool’s biggest disappointments as he failed to ride challenges and kept giving the ball away.
And Pennant took to X to voice his frustration, suggesting that he will eventually fail to satisfy expectations at the club, as was the case with Nunez.
He wrote on X: “Wirtz is making it harder and harder for you die-hards to defend him, just saying….. yes he’s better football than me. Great, is that your comeback?
“Great player when he is on it and a joy to watch. Like I’ve been saying, we need more; it’s simple as that. I’m seeing a Darwin Nunez developing here!!
“Lord almighty, I hope I’m wrong and all trolls are @ me; I’d be happy, it would make me very happy!!!! Now cmon Liverpool, positive first half, now playing to the Kop.”
We’re not really sure what Pennant meant with the Nunez comparisons, but Wirtz is walking on thin ice at the moment.
His talent is unquestionable and he seems like a really likeable character, but Liverpool desperately need him to step up and be counted in the upcoming weeks as his form is starting to become a massive worry.
