Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is eyeing former Liverpool star Xabi Alonso as a potential replacement for Mikel Arteta, if he leaves the Etihad to take over as the manager of the Gunners.
According to the Star, Guardiola has a two-man shortlist if he does need to hire a new assistant manager; Alonso and Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
Alonso, who worked under Guardiola as a player at Bayern Munich, is currently part of the coaching setup at Real Sociedad but he could soon be on the move if City do want him to replace his close-friend Arteta.
Van Bronckhorst, meanwhile, is out of work after a spell at Feyenoord but the Dutchman has been working in a consultancy role with the City Football Group, and as such, there is already a relationship between himself and the Man City owners.

It would be a bit strange to view Xabi Alonso as an ‘enemy’ if he joins City but that’s essentially what he’ll become as he’ll be plotting to help City win trophies at Liverpool’s expense.
Even so, we doubt there’d be any ill-feeling whatsoever from Liverpool supporters for a man who is very popular amongst the Reds’ fanbase.
