Mascherano preparing for Barcelona exit amid Liverpool links

Javier Mascherano has been talking about his current situation, his time at Barcelona and how he regrets the way that he left Anfield for Catalonia in 2010.

The Argentine defender has a contract with Barcelona which runs out in 2019 but is looking for a switch sooner rather than later.

In seven years at the Camp Nou, Mascherano has won several medals including four La Liga titles and two Champions Leagues.

However, new manager Ernesto Valverde has preferred the centre-back partnership of Gerard Pique and Samuel Umtiti, with the current Barcelona boss looking towards younger players to bring through his own generation in Catalonia.

Speaking to ESPN, the 33-year-old has said, via the Daily Mail):

I think my stage here is ending. I’m not saying it with a heavy heart. I’ve had the best years of my career in this club. I’ll never forget it.

He has said that he wishes to leave clubs on good terms to be remembered fondly, which is what he regrets about when he left Anfield back in 2010.

The former Liverpool man, who has been linked with a dramatic return back to Anfield, said:

I am predisposed to close it on time because when I left Liverpool it wasn’t good for me, and I didn’t like it. I didn’t like having the feeling that I could go back to Liverpool and there was still something toxic there. And I don’t want the same thing to happen to me at Barcelona
