Former Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister has joined Brendan Rodgers’ backroom staff, the club have confirmed.
Sean O’Driscoll and Pep Lijnders had been added to the coaching set-up for the new season, and McAllister has filled the final vacancy.
It was reported that Rodgers preferred a former Liverpool player for the position, and Sami Hyypia and Jamie Carragher were amongst the names being suggested by the press, but it’s the Scot that has returned to Anfield.
The former Scotland international played over 50 matches for the Reds and established himself as a fan favourite during his time at Anfield.
The Reds’ manager at that time, Gerard Houllier, described him as his “most inspirational signing”.
The 50-year-old has managed Coventry City and Leeds United and has also coached at Middlesbrough, as well as working as Houllier’s assistant at Aston Villa.
McAllister is expected to join the squad as they fly out to Asia for the beginning of the pre-season tour on Sunday.
