Meulensteen open to Liverpool role

Meulensteen open to Liverpool role

Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen is open to filling Liverpool’s assistant manager vacancy, according to The Mirror.

The 51-year old, who spent over a decade at United in total across separate spells, is yet to receive an approach from Liverpool.

Meulensteen, who became manager of Fulham in late 2013 but only lasted 17 games, is reportedly being considered for the assistant role at Anfield after Colin Pascoe was dismissed last week.

The Dutchman is highly respected as a coach, but he has previously been critical of Brendan Rodgers’ lack of investment in backroom staff.

Meulensteen is currently working with Philadelphia Union in MLS but would be able to talk to a Premier League club should one wish to speak to him.

His family are still based in Cheshire, so Meulensteen may be tempted by a job offer in the north-west.

Former Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia and Pako Ayestaran, who previously assisted Rafael Benitez during his time at Anfield, have also been linked with coaching roles at the club.

But Alex Inglethorpe, the club’s academy director, is thought to have no interest in taking up a job with the first-team at this time.
