Milner: Messi couldn’t replace Gerrard

Liverpool midfielder James Milner has said no player, not even Lionel Messi, could fill the gap Steven Gerrard has left at Liverpool.

Milner, since making the move down the M62 to Merseyside, has settled well into the Reds’ set up, scoring two goals in two games during the Australian leg of the pre-season tour.

Speaking to the Australian news channel ABC, Milner said, “I don’t think there’s someone on the planet who could replace Gerrard for what he did for Liverpool Football Club over the years, so as a team we need to replace his output.”

“Even Messi would struggle to replace Stevie for what he’s done for Liverpool over the years. What he’s done on and off the field, as a player and as a captain, as a person, he’s been amazing. It’s a big void to fill but I’m sure as a team we can do that.”

It remains to be seen how the squad will deal with the departure of the influential 35-year-old with the Premier League season almost two weeks away.
