Mohamed Salah chases history: Can he eclipse Steven Gerrard’s assist record at Nottingham Forest?

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has his eyes set on another Premier League record as Arne Slot prepare to face Nottingham Forest.

Salah’s return from AFCON has prompted a slight change in Liverpool’s fortunes as the Reds’ look to secure a third consecutive victory this weekend.

The Reds have scored 20 goals in the seven games since the Egyptian returned to the side, having managed the same amount in the previous 12 without their talisman.

Fresh from his stunning performance during Liverpool’s 3-0 FA Cup win over Brighton, Salah will be looking to claim more history at the City Ground on Sunday.

Salah closes in on Liverpool Premier League assist record

In their most recent league outing, Virgil Van Dijk’s header was enough to claim a gritty 1-0 win at Sunderland, handing the Black Cats their first home defeat of the campaign.

The Liverpool skipper met Salah’s corner 15 minutes into the second half to secure all three points for the visitors.

With another assist, Salah moved joint level with Steven Gerrard as Liverpool’s top assister in the Premier League era.

Despite being known for his proficiency in front of goal, the Egyptian has provided for his teammates 92 times since making his Premier League debut in 2017.

Salah will be looking to move one clear of the Liverpool legend with an assist against Forest this weekend.

Bad omens in Salah’s hunt for assist record

However, despite having the opportunity to eclipse Gerrard’s record this weekend, Forest has not proved to be a happy hunting ground for the Egyptian.

Salah has yet to score or assist in any of his appearances at the City Ground in the competition (two).

That makes the stadium one of just two venues Salah has played at more than once in the league for Liverpool without a goal involvement (also three outings at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane).

Overall, it has been a quiet season for Liverpool’s main man. After firing the Reds to Premier League glory with 29 goals last year, Salah has scored just four times this season.

The 33-year-old will be looking to put that record right on Sunday as Liverpool look to build momentum in their push for a Champions League place.
