Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has seemingly aimed a subtle dig at Jurgen Klopp for his lack of trophies at Liverpool.
Mourinho was at Man United for just two whole seasons before leaving in December but won two major trophies whilst Klopp, approaching the end of his fourth year at Anfield, is still waiting for his first piece of silverware in England.
After his United dismissal, Mourinho has been working as a pundit for BeIN Sports and recently told the channel, as cited by the Evening Standard:
I won titles everywhere I have been and I cannot run away from my mentality. Some coaches like to sell the idea of philosophy, but you have to sell the philosophy after you win. If you win nothing what is the point? If your team plays very well, your team wins, so I don’t like these contradictions we have in football nowadays.
It comes as no surprise that the Portuguese boss questions other managers’ winning mentalities, with 25 major honours to his name, but it does seem like there’s still a hint of bitterness on show.
Klopp has come close to winning gold with Liverpool, falling short in the League Cup, Europa League and Champions League Finals but is leading the club to an impressive Premier League title challenge this season.
With seven games left to play, the Reds lead Manchester City by two points at the league summit – Pep Guardiola’s side with a game in hand – so it’s going to be interesting to see if Klopp can get over the line and do something Mourinho failed to do at Old Trafford.
