Opinion: Returning Harvey Elliott is ready to play key attacking role

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted that the current Anfield crop is the ‘strongest squad’ during his tenure at the club.

Part of that newfound strength has coincided with the return of attacking midfielder Harvey Elliott – as well as the signing of Colombian winger Luis Diaz.

Having started three consecutive Premier League games in the early season, the 18-year-old looked primed to play a huge role for the Reds this term.

Seemingly forging a frightening attacking understanding with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah, Elliott’s emergence was cruelly halted by injury.

However, back to full fitness and firing once again, the man recently hailed as ‘immense’ by Danny Mills is ready to infiltrate Klopp’s plans.

Following a goalscoring return against Cardiff City, Elliott impressed off the bench in the 2-0 victory over Leicester City in midweek.

Now as the Reds prepare to face Burnley at Turf Moor, the teenager is in contention to start in a midfield trio alongside Fabinho and Thiago.

Despite the availability of Jordan Henderson, the starlet who managed 19 direct goals involvements whilst on loan at Blackburn Rovers last term should be given the nod.

Although Klopp will likely guard against rushing the talented teen back, Elliott has defied conventional wisdom before now and this is a perfect opportunity to step up his comeback yet further.

An altogether different option to Henderson, the £13.5million vaued attack-minded midfielder can provide a cutting edge against a side that looks to defend deep and stifle Liverpool.

With the likes of Sadio Mane, Divock Origi and Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain also available, just to have an abundance of options is refreshing for Klopp and this team selection will be one of the most intriguing of the season to date.

Predicted XI: Alisson; Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson; Fabinho, Harvey Elliott, Thiago; Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino.
