Divock Origi has revealed he’s loving playing out wide for Liverpool as he did for his youth teams following a run of game time alongside Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.
The Belgian forward was made to wait until December to make his first Premier League appearance of the season but, since then, has featured in nine of the Reds’ last 13 matches, either as a starter of the bench.
Speaking to the Official LFC Magazine, cited by the Liverpool Echo, Origi insisted he’s happy to fulfil any role that’s needed as long as it helps the team achieve its goals this season.
I loved that role. Even in the youth teams, I used to play up front and on the wing so I’m comfortable in both positions. People have maybe seen me more up front in the last couple of years but I totally love it on the wing as well. I focus on what I can do to help the team in whatever capacity that is. I know that we have big goals so whatever role I am asked to play, I am happy to do that. Of course, I am ambitious and I want to play as much as possible but the most important thing is our team and the team goals.
The 23-year-old played six minutes in his opening league game of the campaign, but in that short amount of time netted a memorable stoppage-time winner against Everton in the Merseyside derby.
Many were surprised to see him stay at Anfield past the summer after an underwhelming loan spell at VfL Wolfsburg and he was again tipped to leave in January but is now an important attacking option for Jurgen Klopp.
Liverpool need as much back-up firepower as they have ahead of a hectic Premier League run-in and Champions League Quarter-Final so you’d expect to see Origi up front or out wide regularly from now until the end of May.
