Origi laments Liverpool’s lofty expectations

Divock Origi has defended his goalscoring record at Liverpool after being sent to Wolfsburg on a season-long loan.

Origi joined the Bundesliga side this summer after falling behind Daniel Sturridge and new arrival Dominic Solanke in the pecking order.

The Belgian has played 77 games for the Reds since joining in 2015, finding the net on 21 occasions. That works out as a goal every 3.7 games – the kind of record that should be expected from a young striker, according to Origi.

“You can’t expect a youngster to perform consistently,” the 22-year-old insisted.

“It went with ups and with downs. I scored 21 goals in two years. Not bad.”

Origi is planning to return to Liverpool in 2018 and fight for a first-team spot.

“I’ve learned a lot at Liverpool,” he said. “It’s still my plan to return after this season. But now I’m focusing on Wolfsburg.”

Since his deadline day move, Origi has started every game for Wolfsburg and scored his first goal for the club against Werder Bremen last month.

Liverpool insisted on a clause allowing them to recall the striker in January if they deem it necessary. There is no option to buy at the end of the loan.
