Pundit makes bizarre ‘bright future’ claim about Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Former Tottenham striker Garth Crooks has bizarrely suggested Alex Oxlade-Chamberlian could have a ‘bright future’ at Liverpool.

This comes after the 28-year-old assisted the second goal against Brighton & Hove Albion having come on as a first-time substitute.

Despite the high-quality delivery for Sadio Mane’s header, it was an otherwise difficult afternoon for the midfielder.

Speaking on Final Score, Crooks claimed that Oxlade-Chamberlain still possesses the ability to succeed at Anfield.

It was a superb ball. A wonderful ball. It was outstanding. It’s a chance for Alex to come in, who has had a difficult time since his injuries. Perhaps he might have a run of two or three games. They need him now because they have injury issues. If he can start playing balls like that then he can have a bright future at that football club.

Reds’ boss Jurgen Klopp is now likely to be without Harvey Elliott, James Milner and Naby Keita for the foreseeable future.

That leaves the returning Thiago and Fabinho to join Jordan Henderson, Curtis Jones and Oxlade-Chamberlain as existing midfield options.

Clearly still a player with the ability to impact games at the top level, it remains imminently possible the ex-Arsenal ace will have a role to play on Merseyside moving forwards.

However, given the evident defensive frailties on show on Saturday and an unfortunately checkered injury record, claiming a ‘bright future’ is on the horizon seems fanciful.

Perhaps continued use from the bench and in domestic cup competitions is the more likely squad role as the 35-cap Englishman continues to fight for any sort of future beyond this season.
