Rodgers eager to keep Lucas

Brendan Rodgers has ruled out a move for midfielder, Lucas Leiva, this January transfer window. The Brazilian midfielder has been subject to strong speculation linking him with a move away from Anfield, with clubs such as Napoli and most noticeably, Inter Milan, interested. However, Rodgers is keen to keep Lucas at the club, according to The Times.

Lucas’ recent inclusion in Liverpool’s side has brought some new found form into a side that was very down and nervous beforehand. Lucas has been at the club since 2007 and his loyalty has been fantastic but his game-time has often been limited since Rodgers took over in 2012. At the moment, though, Lucas is looking an integral part of the side.

Inter are not giving up on Lucas, though. If the Italian giants can get the funds together, they will be bidding for the 28 year-old, according to Tony Barrett of The Times. To convince Lucas to stay at Liverpool, Rodgers has told him about how last season he was perhaps unfairly left out for the majority of the time and has told him how key he is to the Liverpool midfield, especially now that Steven Gerrard is occupying an advanced role.

Rodgers was asked at Thursday’s press conference about the possible departure of Lucas Leiva, here’s what he had to say:

“No, he is not one that we’d want to lose. At the end of the season, everything is looked at again, but there is a good flow, players are starting to adapt, so I don’t need to disrupt them.”
