Brendan Rodgers has spoken to the press ahead of Liverpool’s Europa League clash with Besiktas on Thursday. The boss was very complimentary about Daniel Sturridge and how he’s dealt with the pressure following his recent return to action.
“He’s obviously had a tough period. When you’re that talented and you have so much ability, to be out for that length of time is very difficult.”
“He’s been able to go away and reflect on elements of his game, he hasn’t been just recovering in terms of his injuries but he’s been analysing his game.”
Rodgers also added: “What’s been brilliant for me is how he’s taken on a real leadership role as well. He was going back, you can see him organising at corners and set-pieces, making sure people are doing their job – as well as that wonderful ability he has.”
After failing in their Champions League attempt earlier in the season, Rodgers has since changed the formation of his side. The Northern Irishman was quizzed on whether or not the new system would work in Europe this time:
“We’ll find out, if we play that way, but it’s a way of working which suits our players. There’s no tougher league than the Premier League – it’s a real tough competition with top class players and outstanding managers. So for us, it’s worked very well.”
“If we decide to play that way in European competition then we hold no fear, the system is irrelevant, it’s about a return to identity as a team and the style of football which is ultimately out there between games.”
Liverpool have already played 40 games this season, but Rodgers insists that the squad can handle playing and challenging in three competitions (Premier League, F.A Cup and Europa League):
“I said at the beginning of the season, one of the objectives was to win a trophy, hopefully you will have seen from efforts we want to do everything we can to win a trophy. This competition (Europa League) is no different, it’s a very prestigious competition and one we want to do well in.”
“Our focus is on the next game, players over a number of games have been fantastic and we want to continue with the mentality and performance level.”
The manager also shared his thoughts about Lazar Markovic’s four match European ban following his controversial red card against Basel in the Champions League:
“We were obviously disappointed with the length of the ban. We felt it was very harsh but we accept it and unfortunately he won’t be able to contribute. Hopefully he will play many more European games for the club.”
Rodgers also confirmed that his captain, Steven Gerrard, won’t be available for the visit of Besiktas. Rodgers said:
“He won’t have a chance for tomorrow and we just need to assess on a daily basis where Steven is at.”
