Liverpool manager, Brendan Rodgers says that Liverpool now struggle to sign the ‘bigger’ players with more profile. The Northern Irishman, speaking to Chris Bascombe of The Telegraph has admitted that the recent transfer windows haven’t seen Liverpool replace their higher caliber players with other players of similar ilk.
Liverpool failed in their efforts to lure Alexis Sanchez to the club, and the Chilean forward preferred London, so moved to Arsenal, instead. That is the kind of struggle Brendan Rodgers is mentioning.
“We have to believe that the status of this club and the idea that the club moving forward will make players still want to come here. The team have changed and the players have changed but the great name of Liverpool is still the same. For a lot of players, it’s two things – game time and money, simple as that.“
Referring to the previously mentioned Alexis Sanchez saga in not very specific detail, Rodgers says:
“It’s difficult of course because players will opt, for whatever reason, to go elsewhere. Some may prefer to go to Spain, some to London. But you just have to keep working and finding the players who can make you the best you can be.“
Rodgers was also asked about the Financial Fair Play rule and the impact it has had on their transfer dealings recently:
“The ruling has meant that clubs have had to look at things strategically, no question. There are other factors that come into it as well – how owners want to work and how they want to run the club. The owners have been brilliant in my short period of time as manager and in the period before that in terms of how they have set up to run the club.“
“I know the reality of the situation here, it’s not a surprise to me. I know what I am dealing with but we have to strive to be the best no matter what is happening with other teams (transfer wise).“
Rodgers talking about other teams signing players and Liverpool perhaps falling behind, in that aspect.
Brendan Rodgers acknowledging Liverpool’s perhaps not so fantastic previous transfer windows, but remains optimistic about that the club’s stature can be a persuasive factor in player’s minds in future dealings.
