Skrtel set for contract talks

Talks have begun over a new contract for Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel, according to reports.

The centre-back, whose current deal ends in June 2016, has scored 17 goals in 270 appearances since his £8.8m move from Zenit St. Petersburg in the January window of 2008.

After seemingly falling out of favour in the current manager’s first season, Skrtel saw himself reinstated into the side on a regular basis last season, scoring an impressive 7 goals from the heart of defence, a Premier League record.

Off the back of a solid start to the current season, manager Brendan Rodgers is keen to retain his services beyond his current deal.

The Slovak has been virtually ever present for the Reds this season, establishing himself as Liverpool’s first choice centre back, with Dejan Lovren failing to make the position his own after his £20m move from Southampton in the summer.

Skrtel recently slotting into the centre a back three with Mamadou Sakho and one of Emre Can or Kolo Toure either side of him in a formation that has been a huge component in Liverpool’s upturn in form.
