Southgate selects “very good” Joe Gomez in England squad

England manager Gareth Southgate has been full of praise for Liverpool defender Joe Gomez after selecting the youngster in the senior England squad, according to a report on the Telegraph.

Gomez has been hugely impressive when called upon this season and has seen himself become a regular in the right-back position at the Merseyside club during the absence of Nathaniel Clyne through injury.

Gomez, who was appointed England Under-21s captain earlier this year, has enjoyed a fine start to the season and has put the injury troubles of recent years firmly behind him.

The 20-year-old has grown in confidence and England boss Southgate has rewarded him by promoting him from the U21s to the senior squad for the upcoming friendly matches against Brazil and Germany.

Southgate said:

He’s a centre back. A back-three is perfect for him, he’s quick, athletic and can use the ball. [He has a] Great personality, really good feedback from Aidy at U21s. I’m pleased to work with him again.

Gomez is one of three Under-21 players who have been called up to the senior squad. Tammy Abraham and Ruben Loftus-Cheek also got the call by Southgate who is looking to give the youngsters a chance to prove themselves on the international stage.
