Ryan Gravenberch’s second-half red card was a pivotal moment in the game as Liverpool fell to a 3-0 defeat vs Manchester City.
The Reds were the better team until that point, but after the Dutchman’s dismissal, City ran riot as goals from Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki sealed the deal.
After the game, Andoni Iraola claimed Gravenberch’s first booking was a bit soft as he barely made contact with Elliot Anderson.
And now, the likes of Peter Schmeichel, Freddie Ljungberg and Jaap Stam have delivered their verdicts on the incident.
Ryan Gravenberch shouldn’t have been sent off for Liverpool
After the game, each of them confirmed via Viaplay that the Dutchman was unfortunate to have been sent off.
Peter Schmeichel: “I think that’s really wrong – and that’s a refereeing mistake.”
Freddie Ljungberg: “I think it’s very harsh… Definitely, it’s a free-kick, no question about it. But that does not have to be a second yellow in this fixture… I think that’s very unfair.”
Jaap Stam: “This one, for me, is definitely not a second card.”
There’s no point dwelling on ifs and buts as City walked away from Anfield with three points. But if there was ever a game where a single decision changed the course of the contest, it was this one.
A truly unfortunate outing for Gravenberch, who was easily the best player on the pitch before his sending off.
