Virgil van Dijk has said he’s “honoured and proud” to be crowned the official Premier League Player of the Season for the 2018-19 season.
The award has been voted on by supporters, a panel of football experts and the captains of all 20 Premier League clubs, with Van Dijk the most popular pick.
Speaking to the Premier League website, the Dutchman explained how delighted he was to pick up another individual honour and paid tribute to his team-mates for their wonderful season:
It’s a great honour and I’m very proud. Without everyone here at Liverpool, fans and players, it wouldn’t be possible so I will definitely give them credit for all of it as well. I think the whole season in the Premier League has been outstanding. The only thing is we have been competing with another team that’s pretty good. But I think it’s a joy to watch, this title race, for neutral fans.
Van Dijk has beaten Manchester City trio Bernardo Silva, Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero, Chelsea’s Eden Hazard and Liverpool team-mate Sadio Mane to the award.
He’ll be completely focused on helping the Reds to one last win today though, whilst the club will be praying for Brighton & Hove Albion to get something from Manchester City at the same time down south.
Virgil van Dijk, Player of the Season; a worthy winner.
