Virals: James Pearce claims ‘uncertainty’ over Jordan Henderson’s future

Liverpool could be staring a repeat of a mistake made this summer directly in the face.

Having watched reliable central midfielder Gini Wijnaldum leave for free after months of failed contract discussions, the Reds are facing a similar fate with Jordan Henderson.

The inspirational leader is believed to be in negotiations with the Anfield club over a new deal but talks aren’t progressing as hoped.

That’s according to a report from The Athletic, as cited by James Pearce on Twitter.

The report states that the hierarchy have ‘bigger priorities’ to address this summer in tying down the likes of Alisson Becker, Mohamed Salah and Fabinho.

In a bizarre turn of events, the same report also claims Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino is ‘keeping a close eye’ on how the situation regarding the 31-year-old develops.

Henderson celebrated 10 years as Red last month having signed from Sunderland in 2011, making 392 appearances since arriving on Merseyside.

If ever news was unwelcomed this was it.

On the eve of a domestic campaign, Liverpool needs positivity more or less all the way, not uncertainty over the future of the captain and such a talismanic figure in the squad.

Whilst it remains imminently possible Henderson will remain a Red beyond his 2023 contract, any upheaval would be grossly unwelcomed.

Valued at £18million (Transfermarkt), the 64-cap England ace may not be regarded as the most important asset in terms of marketability, but when it comes to impact on the side, few can compete.

FSG must put their reluctancy to offer big deals to aging stars to one side for someone so integral to Jurgen Klopp’s plans.
