Wijnaldum wants more time to consider Liverpool future, claims journalist

Gini Wijnaldum wants more time to consider his Liverpool future, according to the Guardian‘s Fabrizio Romano.

The Dutchman has been an integral player for the Reds since joining from Newcastle United in 2016, helping them win both the Champions League and Premier League.

Wijnaldum’s current deal expires at the end of the season, however, and he has been linked with a move to Barcelona in the past.

It is still unknown whether or not the 30-year-old will extend his stay at Liverpool, but this fresh update claims he wants slightly longer to weigh up his options, having been offered a new contract earlier this month.

Wijnaldum has shown this season why it is imperative the Reds keep hold of him beyond this season.

He isn’t always the most noticeable player on the pitch, but his influence in midfield is vast, providing endless amounts of industry, energy and underrated quality on the ball.

His pass completion rate of 92.3 percent in the Premier League this season is only bettered by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (94.1%) and Curtis Jones (92.9%), both of whom have played far less.

The Netherlands international is only really appreciated when he doesn’t play, with Liverpool a lesser team without him.

The hope is that Wijnaldum realises he is part of a special team, and can continue to be, eventually putting pen to paper on a new deal.
