Ex- Manchester United icon backs the Liverpool great
Paul Scholes, one of the Premier League’s finest, named his greatest players. However, the list overlooks Liverpool’s great Steven Gerrard.
The former Red was the definition of loyalty at Liverpool. His growth from a trembling youngster to a captain has been an incredible path. He has made 505 appearances, scoring 120 goals and providing 92 assists in the Premier League.
Additionally, the attacking midfielder’s signature was the long-range strike that kept Anfield erupting whenever he connected from distance.
Having been part of the side for 17 years, the ex-midfielder has helped transform the team. However, Scholes had not included Gerrard for the sole reason that of not won the Premier League. This one trophy has been the only missing piece in the former player’s illustrious career.

Having praised the former Red so often, it’s shocking that the ex-Manchester United player did not include the midfielder in his list. Both players had different responsibilities. But the teams relied heavily on their presence to achieve success.
Being a Red Devil, part of two extraordinary teams under Sir Alex Ferguson. It’s a no-brainer that three of four were from his own team.
Speaking on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast, Paddy McGuinness asked Scholes to name his Premier League Mount Rushmore. His list included Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, and Thierry Henry, according to GiveMeSport.
Last month, Wayne Rooney shared his thoughts on Gerrard, offering his perspective on the Liverpool great. Speaking to the BBC, the former Red Devil says the Liverpool hero is the most complete midfielder the Premier League has ever seen.
The former United player feels the ex-midfielder is capable of playing multiple roles at a world-class level.
“When you’re talking about the complete midfield player, there are five really for me in the Premier League. Four I played with, one I didn’t.”
“That was Gerrard, Scholes, (Michael) Carrick, (Patrick) Vieira, and Lampard. The complete midfield player out of all of them, it has to be Gerrard.”
“I think in terms of a midfield player that can do everything, he has to be the one you pick.”
Overall, Gerrard has played more than 700 times for Liverpool. In that period, he scored 186 goals in total and won 10 trophies, including the Champions League.
The debate over the Premier League’s “Greatest of All Time” will likely rage on as long as the sport exists, often splitting fans down club lines.
While Paul Scholes prioritises the tangible silverware and dominance he shared with his teammates at Old Trafford, Wayne Rooney’s endorsement serves as a powerful reminder of individual brilliance.
Gerrard’s lack of a Premier League winner’s medal is often used as a stick to beat his legacy, yet his peers those who faced him in the heat of battle frequently cite him as the most daunting opponent they ever encountered.
Ultimately, Gerrard’s impact transcends a trophy cabinet. He was the heartbeat of a club, a player who carried the weight of a city on his shoulders, and a talent capable of turning a game with a single swing of his boot.
Whether or not he sits on a personal “Mount Rushmore,” his status as the complete midfielder is etched into the history of the English game confirmed not just by the Anfield faithful, but by the very rivals who fought to stop him.
