Manchester City team bus to take alternative route to Anfield

The Manchester City team bus will take a different route to Anfield than for the Champions League quarter-final earlier this year, following a number of issues.

A storm of cans, flares, and other objects were hurled at the coach on its approach to the Liverpool ground in April.

In addition to the alternative route, Merseyside Police have announced an increased presence will be in attendance for Sunday’s match, which sees Liverpool and Manchester City level on points at the top of the table.

Superintendent Dave Charnock said (quoted by BBC Sport):

We have prepared a comprehensive and appropriate policing operation ahead of Sunday’s game and have liaised with both clubs and their supporter groups,

The assault from Liverpool fans on the bus last season resulted in injuries to two police officers, and rendered the coach unusable for the return journey.

Liverpool apologised for the actions of some supporters, and liaised with Merseyside Police in the aftermath of the incident.
