Fabinho discusses preparing for new centre-back role

Fabinho has discussed his recent stint at centre-back for Liverpool, saying he could see his change in position coming.

The Brazilian has recovered from a slow start at Anfield to become a key figure in the Reds’ title bid.

Although brought in as a midfielder, and no doubt set to be used there in the long-term, Liverpool’s defensive injury crisis has seen Jurgen Klopp alter his role.

Fabinho has told the club’s official website that he knew a spell at the back was imminent and has put his impressive run of form there down to work on the training ground:

Some weeks ago, I knew this could be an option because we had some players out injured and we only had two centre-backs available.

When Dejan got injured, I knew it would be logical that I’d play in that position.

I had some training sessions playing in that position, which helped me adapt better and pick up certain aspects, like positioning and movements you need to be natural at to play in this position.

When it came to playing in a game it was a bit easier because I’d trained in the position.

Fabinho may return to a midfield berth for Saturday’s visit of Crystal Palace, with Joel Matip fit again.

He has done so well at centre-back in the two games he has played that Klopp may consider keeping him there, though.
