Graeme Souness believes that if Liverpool are to fend off Manchester City’s hopes of retaining the Premier League title this season, they must win each of their 12 remaining fixtures.
Pep Guardiola’s side returned to the top of the table with an impressive 6-0 home win against Chelsea. The Cityzens have, however, played one game more than their Merseyside challengers.
Liverpool currently trail City at the top only on goal difference, which widened with such an emphatic win at the Etihad Stadium.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, former Reds star Souness stated that the reigning champions laid down a marker to Jurgen Klopp’s side.
As quoted by the Daily Mail, he said:
City have put a marker down today. You’re going to have to win every single game, Liverpool, to win this league.
I don’t want to say it… [City] are going to take some stopping aren’t they? Looking at them, how clinical they are. They’ve had their rollicking off their manager, they’ve had their hiccup, they’ve had their points drop. They are going to take some stopping if that’s their mood between now and the end.
Liverpool secured a vital win of their own on Saturday. Goals from Sadio Mane, Georginio Wijnaldum and Mohamed Salah helped the Reds to a comfortable 3-0 win against Bournemouth at Anfield.
Klopp’s men face a testing trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United next in the Premier League.
