Bayern Munich legend says pressure is on Liverpool

Bayern Munich will enjoy being the underdogs against Liverpool, with pressure on the Reds to win.

That’s according to Bayern and Germany legend Lothar Matthaus, who was speaking ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League clash between the two sides.

Liverpool host the Bundesliga champions in the last-16 first leg, with Jurgen Klopp’s side seen by many as the favourites to progress.

Having lost just once in the Premier League all season, coupled with Bayern not always convincing week in, week out, it is an understandable opinion to have.

Bayern are invariably the favourites to win any match, but Matthaus wrote in his column for Sky that his former club will enjoy their tag as underdogs, also praising the job Klopp is doing:

I believe Bayern have a psychological advantage that isn’t insignificant. For the first time since last season’s semi-final against Real Madrid, Bayern aren’t seen as favourites.

It’s the first time that there’s more pressure on the opponent (apart from the away game against BVB perhaps).

The expectations for Liverpool are extremely high thanks to the great work of Jurgen Klopp.

With his style, great transfer policy, the atmosphere at the club and quality on the pitch, Klopp has made the whole world talk about Liverpool once again.

It should be a thrilling encounter at Anfield, with both sides sure to attack one another.

Klopp’s past rivalry with Bayern also gives the tie an extra edge, having done battle with them many times during his Borussia Dortmund days.
