Liverpool are prepared to to activate the €25million release clause in Julian Brandt’s Bayer Leverkusen contract, according to Bild.

The Germany international was a key transfer target for the Reds back in 2017, but Mohamed Salah was signed instead.

Any transfer talk linking him with Liverpool again had cooled until recently, but they now look right back in the hunt for his signature.

Brandt’s release clause is surprisingly low for a 22-year-old with such a burgeoning reputation, and there is likely to be a big battle for his services.

Real Madrid and Juventus look set to provide the toughest competition to Liverpool.

It should be stressed that the release clause will come into effect if Leverkusen fail to qualify for the Champions League this season – they are currently seven points adrift of fourth-place Eintracht Frankfurt, with five matches to play.

Brandt has shone in an attacking midfield role this season and could be the perfect man to give Liverpool another dimension in the middle of the park.
