Liverpool’s interest in Werner “has increased”

Liverpool’s interest in RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner “has increased” in recent weeks, according to journalist Ian McGarry.

The 23-year-old has been one of the Reds’ most strongly-linked transfer targets this season, as he continues to thrive in the Bundesliga.

Werner’s style of play suits Liverpool down to the ground and Jurgen Klopp is thought to see him as an ideal man to add quality and depth to his attack.

The Germany international isn’t without suitors, however, with Bayern Munich arguably the current favourites to sign him.

Although talk of a move to Liverpool has quietened a little in recent times, McGarry believes the Reds are still keen on him.

Speaking on The Transfer Window podcast, he says their interest has gone up a notch in the last fortnight or so:

I think it’s slightly conclusive of what an incredible season Liverpool have had, where they shared the Golden Boot with two of their players, [Sadio] Mane and [Mohamed] Salah, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in terms of goals scored in the Premier League.

I still believe the glaring deficiency in this Liverpool team is an out-and-out striker who scores 20-plus goals in a season.

Clearly if they had that they would have won the Premier League this season, because they would have outscored and outpointed Manchester City.

We mentioned a few weeks ago on the podcast that they have an interest in Timo Werner at RB Leipzig and that interest has increased I’m led to believe in the last two weeks.

It would be a surprise if Liverpool didn’t make attacking reinforcements this summer.

Daniel Sturridge is almost certain to leave, Divock Origi’s future is still up in the air and youngster Rhian Brewster is still a maturing talent.
