Bayern Munich attempted to “hijack” Liverpool’s move for Sepp van den Berg during his medical, according to the Times‘ Paul Joyce.
The 17-year-old completed his transfer to the Reds on Thursday, becoming their first signing of the summer.
Huge things are expected to the young Dutchman, who has been pencilled in as a great centre-back of the future.
Although Liverpool always looked like favourites to acquire Van den Berg’s signature, it has emerged that Bayern Munich had other ideas.
Taking to Twitter, Joyce explained the Bundesliga champions’ attempt to make a late move for the teenager, saying:
Bayern Munich sought to hijack Sepp van den Berg’s move to Liverpool while he was having his medical on Merseyside.
It is further proof of the monster Jurgen Klopp has turned Liverpool into that they can now see off interest from Europe’s other top clubs.
In the past, it would have been easy to envisage Bayern turning Van den Berg’s head at the last minute, but the lure of playing for the newly crowned European champions proved too much.
