Liverpool must bite the bullet and let Wilson leave this summer

Liverpool must be ruthless when it comes to Harry Wilson this summer, moving him on permanently and bringing an end to his Reds career.

The 22-year-old is currently on loan at Bournemouth where he has impressed this season, scoring seven times in the Premier League.

Wilson will return to Anfield when the current campaign concludes, however, at which point he could find himself at a crossroads in his career.

The Welshman spoke brilliantly to BT Sport over the weekend, discussing his future in depth and providing plenty of insight about his character and aims moving forward.

Although Wilson is bullish about making the grade at Liverpool in the long-term, he is no longer good enough for this fantastic, record-breaking side.

While some may point out that he is yet to be given an opportunity to prove himself, he has never done enough in pre-season, or on loan at other clubs, to show that he can be a consistent squad player for the Reds.

Wilson’s eye for the spectacular is undeniable, but when the stunners aren’t flying in, there isn’t a huge amount more to offer.

The youngster hasn’t registered a single assist in any competition this season, and although he is playing for a struggling team, that is a worrying statistic for an attacking wide player.

Wilson also doesn’t possess the electrifying pace to make him a key weapon from the substitutes’ bench for Liverpool, which Divock Origi can provide, for example, despite his faults.

The bottom line is that Liverpool have moved on without Wilson. There was a time before Jurgen Klopp’s reign when he could easily have cut the mustard in a Reds shirt, but the European champions are now in a position where they need top-class players in reserve, not hit-and-miss individuals.

The fact that Liverpool are reportedly showing interest in the likes of Timo Werner and Jadon Sancho, despite Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino seemingly all staying put, says a lot about Klopp’s squad ambitions.

Wilson is a good footballer, without question – one who can go on to enjoy an excellent top-flight career, as well as being an important player for Wales – but as he approaches 23, though, the more it becomes clear that he is not at the level required to make it at Liverpool.
