Liverpool and Man United neck-and-neck in most goals in history

Liverpool scored the 10,000th goal in their history on Tuesday night, during the Reds’ 2-0 win over Midtjylland in the Champions League.

It was Diogo Jota who secured the milestone for his new team, in a moment that will always go down in history at the club.

The Portuguese tapped home in front of the Kop after being teed-up by Trent Alexander-Arnold early in the second half, before Mohamed Salah doubled Jurgen Klopp’s side’s advantage in stoppage time.

Some legendary names of the past have scored previous milestone strikes, including Ian St John (5,000th), Terry McDermott (6,000th), John Aldridge (7,000th) and Michael Owen (8,000th), and Jota posted on Twitter to speak of his delight at the goal:

This achievement comes just a month after Marcus Rashford scored Manchester United’s 10,000th goal in their Premier League win at Brighton, highlighting how neck-and-neck they and Liverpool have been throughout history.

The pair remain bitter rivals, with United edging Liverpool 20-19 on league titles, but the Reds winning six European Cups in comparison to the Red Devils’ three.

Since Rashford’s goal in September, United have reached a total of 10,011 and will be hoping to add to that tally against RB Leipzig on Wednesday evening.

You wouldn’t bet against Liverpool overtaking their adversaries sooner rather than later, though.
