Liverpool set to ignore signing new goalkeeper and offer Kelleher new deal

Liverpool are set to ignore the idea of signing a new goalkeeper in January, instead offering Caoimhin Kelleher a new deal.

That’s according to Football Insider, who claim that Michael Edwards has done a U-turn, such has been the impressive nature of Kelleher’s performances.

The 22-year-old shone for Liverpool against Wolves on Sunday night, again filling the void left by Alisson.

It is now believed that the Reds will offer Kelleher a lucrative new contract, with his current deal expiring in 2022.

There was the option of bringing in a new deputy to Alisson in January, but the Irishman has seemingly done enough to change Edwards’ mind.

This says everything about Liverpool’s recruitment strategy and trusting in youth, with Kelleher given the chance to shine and excelling in the process.

He isn’t at Alisson’s level, of course, but he already looks a better option than Adrian, looking better on the ball and possessing more calm than his older teammate.

The hope is that Alisson is back as soon as possible, but Kelleher is showing that he can shine in his absence.

He has already made remarkable progress this season and deserves huge praise for filling in under great pressure. A new deal is fully merited on current form.
