Andoni Iraola Liverpool Opener At Newcastle Confirmed Ahead Of 2026/27 Season

Liverpool will open the 2026/27 Premier League season away at Newcastle United, giving Andoni Iraola an immediate high-profile first competitive match as Reds head coach.

The fixture, confirmed by Liverpool, sends the club to St James’ Park on Sunday, 23 August, before the new campaign settles into a demanding domestic and European rhythm. It is an early test with clear weight: a new coach, a difficult away ground, and a Liverpool side trying to set the tone quickly after a summer of transition.

The club’s official schedule also shows Liverpool ending the league season at Anfield against AFC Bournemouth on Sunday, 30 May, while Champions League league-phase dates will be layered into the autumn programme, according to Liverpool’s confirmed 2026/27 fixture list.

Why the Newcastle opener matters

For Iraola, the opener is more than a calendar note. Newcastle away should give supporters a fast read on Liverpool’s structure, pressing habits and selection priorities under the new regime.

It also sharpens the importance of pre-season planning. Liverpool have limited competitive runway before a fixture that will be watched for clues about the new coach’s preferred midfield balance, attacking combinations and defensive risk level.

The wider calendar is awkward enough to make a strong start valuable. With Champions League football returning in September, Liverpool need early league points before European travel and rotation begin to complicate the week-to-week rhythm.
