Thiago Alcantara to ‘step up recovery’ before end of the month

Liverpool could have been handed a pre-Christmas boost as a report from the Sunday World (15 December) claims Thiago Alcantara could return to action before the end of the month.

The Reds’ summer signing has not played since a look-away-now tackle from Everton’s Richarlison left him struggling with a knee problem in the Merseyside derby two months ago which put Virgil Van Dijk out for the season.

The Spaniard, who is among the world’s elite midfielders, has shown glimpses of his class during his two outings for the Reds and Jurgen Klopp will be desperate to have him back available so that he can finally get his Liverpool career properly kick-started.

Signed from Bayern Munich for £25m, the 29-year-old arrived at Anfield off the back of a 2019/20 trophy treble with his former club.

Klopp and the supporters need an injury boost in what up until now has been a dire season on that front.

The return of the lesser-seen but much-adored Thiago, even just back to full training, is perhaps the perfect tonic for Kopites who have been ruing their wretched luck throughout this campaign.

Liverpool have been coping relatively well and, ahead of their showdown with Tottenham, the defending Premier League champions sit joint-top of the table.

However, the performance at Fulham showed signs of weariness, particularly in Gini Winjaldum – and getting midfield options such as Thiago back will provide a huge sigh of relief.
