Liverpool not ‘top of priority list’ for David Alaba

Liverpool have reportedly offered a contract to wantaway Bayern Munich star David Alaba, although Sky Deutschland have moved to quell the tide of excitement over the Austrian’s potential arrival on Merseyside.

Italian journalist Romeo Agresti claimed that the Reds had offered the 28-year-old a contract with a salary of £175,000 per week, although Sky Deutschland since reported that Alaba is ‘negotiating with five clubs’ and Anfield ‘may not be at the top of his list’ of desired destinations.

Previously it had seemed as though the decision on the Austrian’s next club would hinge on whether Real Madrid were in the frame, with the Spanish giants believed to be the dream move for the versatile defender. However, it seems any deal for Alaba may not be cut-and-dried for any potential suitor, with as many as five clubs seemingly keen on a summer switch.

The seven-time Austrian Footballer of the Year has won a multitude of major prizes in club football and would be a superb addition to any squad, Liverpool’s included.

Signing a player of the calibre of Alaba would be yet another huge statement of Liverpool’s progression under Jurgen Klopp.

While ardent Reds may argue that concentrating on summer arrivals when there is an urgent need for signings now is foolhardy, it ties into the sort of long-term planning which has taken the club firmly back to its perch as one of the best in the world.

A potential Alaba-Thiago reunion at Anfield next season would be almost poetic and perhaps a better outcome than the current scattergun approach linking Liverpool with myriad centre-backs.
