Jeremy Doku reveals he turned down Liverpool move last summer

Jeremy Doku has revealed he turned down a move to Liverpool last summer, saying it wasn’t the right time to join a big club.

Doku has been linked with the Reds a number of times down the years, but a move never come to fruition.

Instead, the exciting 18-year-old Belgian joined Rennes from Anderlecht last year and he has registered two assists in Ligue 1 this season.

Speaking to Het Nieuwsblad [via This Is Anfield], explained why he rejected Liverpool’s advances:

I did a lot of research first, wrote down all the positive points and only then did I make a decision.

I knew that I first wanted to make an intermediate step. Going to a top club now would be too soon. I still have a lot to learn and Rennes is the ideal place for that.

In many ways, Doku opting to join Rennes instead of Liverpool makes perfect sense, allowing him more first team opportunities.

The irony is that the Reds’ injury problems may have given the teenager more chances than he expected, though, with Diogo Jota’s long-term absence meaning Jurgen Klopp has lacked top-quality options in wide attacking areas.

It may be that Doku continues to be tracked by Liverpool, however, with the club potentially eyeing up a deal for him further down the line, should he impress in France.
